ヘルスコミュニケーションのワークショップを実施しました/Professor Douglas Storey held a 5-day workshop on developing health communication programs

ウェルビーイング創成センター（CWRA）は2023年12月4日（月）から8日（金）に、ジョンズホプキンス大学 コミュニュケーションプログラムセンターの前コミュニケーション科学・研究担当ディレクターであるダグラス・ストーリー先生を招聘し『戦略的危機管理コミュニケーション5Daysワークショップ』を開催いたしました。

ストーリー先生は、30年近く世界各地 でエイズ、マラリア、リプロダクティブ・ヘルス、子どものサバイバル、予防接種、海洋保護など、さまざまな健康・環境問題 などに社会的・行動変容の研究と実践に 取り組み活躍されているヘルスコミュニケーションの専門家です。今回のワークショップでは、ヘルスコミュニケーションプログラムの基礎となるPプロセス（※5つのステップを通じて対象となる健康問題や住民に合わせたコミュニケーションプログラムを実施する学際的なアプローチ）を豊富な実践例と共に教えてくれました。また、参加者はキルギスの首都ビシュケクの大気汚染について考え、コミュニケーションアプローチを適用した解決策を立案しました。

1 日目、参加者は戦略的ヘルスコミュニケーションの原則や概念、科学的な調査に基づいて背景となる状況を調べる方法を学びました。また、キルギスの公衆衛生医師であり、東京医科歯科大学の卒業生でもあるアサンベク・キジー先生より、キルギスの大気汚染の背景や状況について説明を受けました。

2 日目、参加者は対象集団の特性に合わせたプログラムの設計方法、そして多様なコミュニティアプローチ策について学びました。そしてグループに分かれ、各自プロジェクトの対象者、目的、キャンペーンの名前を決定しました。3日目、参加者はコミュニケーションの中核となるメッセージの策定方法、ヘルスコミュニケーションの醍醐味であるエンターテイメント教育をテーマにした講義を受講しました。参加者たちは、キルギス文化に合わせたオリジナルのロゴやスローガン、ポスターなどを作成しました。また、キルギスからの留学生に協力してもらい、自分たちのメッセージやアイデアを試しました。

4日目以降は、ヘルスコミュニケーションプログラムを継続的に進捗させるために重要なモニタリングや効果評価の方法、そして持続させるための長期的な計画について学びました。最終日の午後は、グループごとにプロジェクトを発表し、ストーリー先生、CWRAセンター長の藤原教授、アサンベク・キジー先生、その他の参加者たちが自分たちの感想を述べ合いました。

ワークショップは大盛況でした。参加者からは「コースは特に楽しかったです。授業は活発で、とても参考になり、興味深かったです。毎日の実習は、最後の発表につながる実践的なディスカッションの機会を提­­供しました。ワークショップで得た知識と技術を将来応用するつもりです。」といった感想が聞かれました。

ストーリー先生はワークショップをこう振り返りました。「2023年12月に開催されたワークショップに参加した10カ国の参加者は、大変熱心で創造性に富んでいました。1週間の短期間に、彼らはデータを分析し、社会・行動変容の理論やリスクコミュニケーションの重要な原則を応用して、キルギスにおける環境保健イニシアチブを策定しました。その際、キルギス出身の東京医科歯科大学（TMDU）の学生や卒業生らが、現実的な技術的アドバイスや 文化的背景や習慣を教えてくれたことは非常に有り難いことでした。最終的に、特に妊婦や新生児への健康影響を考慮し、料理や 暖房による室内空気汚染を減らすための3つの関連プロジェクトを立案することに成功しました。私はどれも十分に実現可能であり、TMDUが、キルギス共和国の民間企業や公的機関、大学、地域社会のパートナーと展開する協力的な取り組みに活用できると信じています。」

Professor Douglas Storey, former director of Communication Science and Research of the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP), held a workshop on “Strategic crisis communication programs” from December 4 to 8, 2023.

Professor Storey is an expert in health communication programs, who has worked for nearly 30 years in many parts of the world on social and behavior change research and practice for a wide range of health and environmental issues, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, reproductive health, child survival, immunization, and marine conservation. He taught about the backbone of the communication program, the “P Process”(a five-step multidisciplinary approach to systematically implement communication programs tailored to the target health issue and population) with real-life examples based on his diverse experiences. The workshop also provided participants with hands-on experience in proposing a health communication campaign related to air pollution in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

 On the first day, participants were introduced to the principles and concepts of strategic health communication and how to understand underlying situations based on scientific research. Also, Dr. Asanbek Kyzy, a public health expert from Kyrgyzstan and a graduate of Tokyo Medical and Dental University, joined the workshop via Zoom and explained the air pollution situation in Kyrgyzstan.

On the second day, the participants learned about strategic design focused on a target audience and community-based approaches to health communication. At this stage, the participants were divided into groups and decided on their target audience, objectives, and their project name. On the third day, the participants learned how to prepare the key message for communication and entertainment education, which is the fun part of health communication. They designed their logos, slogans, and posters that reflected the Kyrgyz culture, with the help of a current Kyrgyz graduate student.

 On days 4 and 5, participants learned about the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, which are critical to progressive improvement and sustainability. In the afternoon of the last day, each group presented their communication projects and received valuable feedback from Prof. Storey, Prof. Fujiwara, Dr. Asanbek Kyzy, and all the other participants. The workshop was received with great enthusiasm. One of the participants said, “I particularly enjoyed the course. The teaching was interactive, informative, and engaging. The daily practice provided an avenue for practical discussions culminating in the final presentation. I plan to apply the knowledge and skills from the workshop”.

The course instructor, Professor Storey, commented “The group of graduate students from over half a dozen countries who participated in the December 2023 course were exceptionally committed and creative. Over an intense period of one week, they analyzed data and applied theories of social and behavior change and key principles of risk communication to the development of strategies for a possible environmental health initiative in Kyrgyzstan. We were fortunate to have several former TMDU students from Kyrgyzstan providing realistic technical advice and cultural guidance throughout the week. By the end, three working groups of students succeeded in designing three related and complementary projects to help reduce the impact of indoor air pollution from cooking and heating fires, especially for pregnant women and newborn infants. I believe these proposed solutions may well be feasible and that TMDU may be able to use them in a collaborative effort with private, public, university, and community partners in the Kyrgyz Republic.”
